If you have been involved in an collision, and have suffered injuries, it is important to know what insurance coverage is available to you to pay medical bills that have been incurred as a result.  In most situations the Personal Injury Protection (“PIP”) portion of your own insurance policy pays reasonable and necessary medical expenses incurred as a result of the accident.  Unless you waived this coverage in writing, you should have this benefit available to you.  Washington State law prevents insurance companies from raising your rates if you use your PIP coverage.  In most cases your PIP coverage will also allow you to receive wage loss compensation if you are unable to work as a result of your injuries.

In addition to getting your medical expenses paid, you are entitled to compensation for your injuries.  This compensation is sought from the party who caused the accident and compensation would come from that party’s insurance company.  If you have been in an accident involving an uninsured motorist, you may also have additional insurance coverage under your own insurance policy though Underinsured or Uninsured Motorist Coverage. 

Also, insurance companies often begin calling you just hours after the accident and attempt to obtain recorded statements and ask questions related to your injuries.  Some insurance companies even train their insurance adjusters to try and get injured parties to minimize their injuries and settle quickly for a nominal amount.  The insurance adjuster wants you to think that the insurance company is looking out for your best interest.  The insurance company DOES NOT have your best interest in mind and they certainly will not protect your rights or provide you with a fair settlement.
